Sober Spirit

Our church had just come out of a conference for the youth and young adults in Muskoka, and I remember being alone in my basement with an old Roland keyboard, spending time in prayer and worship.

This is one of the few songs I’ve written where it truly felt as though the melody and the chords didn’t come from me.

It’s a song of deep reflection and prayer to God — a song of surrender, commitment, and repentance. It was a prayer to God for the idols in my life to burn away in His holiness.

The girl in the album cover art is my sister. In the photo, a fire burns a box of old mementos she carried from past relationships that were unfruitful and damaging — things that had become idols in her own life. I had taken the picture a couple of weeks before recording this song, and it felt as though the two were made for one another.

My prayer is that every person who hears this song would be able to say the same thing: that they would commit themselves wholeheartedly to God and to whatever His plans are for their lives.
